Valerie Li

Valerie Li is the founding first violinist of the JUNO-nominated Afiara Quartet, winner of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition and the Young Canadian Musicians Award, as well as prizes at the Munich ARD International Music Competition and the Banff International String Quartet Competition. Forbes Magazine and CBC Music both listed the quartet’s album “Spin Cycle” in their Top 10 Classical Recordings of the Year. Ms. Li has performed throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, the Kennedy Center, Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, and the Royal Library in Copenhagen. She tours extensively with DJ Kid Koala in the multidisciplinary live production of Nufonia Must Fall.

Ms. Li received her Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Institute, her Master of Music from the New England Conservatory, and her Artist Diploma from the Juilliard School. Her teachers include Miriam Fried, Herbert Greenberg, and Gwen Thompson, with whom she studied in her hometown of Vancouver.

As a member of the Afiara Quartet, Ms. Li has held residencies at San Francisco State University and The Juilliard School, serving as teaching assistant to the Alexander and Juilliard String Quartets, and as Fellowship Quartet at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music. She served as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Toronto as first violinist of the Cecilia String Quartet for the 2017-2018 season. Ms. Li currently teaches chamber music at the RCM’s Glenn Gould School and Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists, and maintains a private teaching studio.
