One selection, own choice. May be any song from a motion picture (background or featured song). Songs from Disney movies or television are excluded (see classes 30601 - 30609). Please select age-appropriate material.

One selection, own choice, including any featured song in a Disney motion picture or television franchise.

One selection. Accompaniment by live acoustic piano only. Please select age-appropriate material. Selections permitted: a) songs that were written for, or first appeared in, a movie or film (e.g., Titanic); b) songs from animated films, anime, movies or television shows/series; c) songs from film musicals (singers must use film version arrangement); d) songs from musicals that have only been workshopped (not fully staged); e) stand-alone songs in musical theatre style; f) songs written for, but have been cut from, staged musicals; g) duets that can be performed as a solo

Rock, Country, Contemporary Folk or Pop Song. Please select age-appropriate material. One song with accompaniment: piano, guitar or backing track (no background vocals). One selection from the following genres: pop, pop/folk, R&B, soul, rock, alternative, indie, jazz or country. Please select age-appropriate material. Self-accompaniment may be on piano, guitar or ukelele. Microphone and speaker will be provided.

Participants in this class may be recommended to advance to the provincial level of competition. All provincial classes for this category are virtual (online) only.

Duet/Trio Guidelines:

• Duets and trios may consist of any combination of voices.

• Only one participant is required to register and pay the entry fee.

• Please list the name(s) of your partner(s) when registering.

• Participants must register in the class that corresponds to the age of the oldest performer.

• The Bernice Bennett Memorial Music Scholarship for Duet is open to duet performers aged 12–18 in any musical discipline.

Repertoire Requirements:

• One selection must be performed.

• All repertoire must come from staged Musical Theatre productions only (live, theatrical stage productions).

• Songs that originated in animated films or television are not permitted in this class and must be entered in the “Songs from the Screen and More – Duets and Trios” category. For a list of eligible repertoire, refer to: https://omfa.ca/ssam-chart

• Material must be age-appropriate for all performers.

• Memorization is required.

Not Permitted in This Class:

• Songs from musicals that have only been workshopped, or from revues, cabarets, or stand-alone musical theatre-style songs (these now belong in “Songs from the Screen and More”)

• Songs from movie musicals or TV shows

• Operetta/light opera selections (e.g., Gilbert & Sullivan, Romberg, Lehar, Johann Strauss)

• Selections that are primarily spoken patter

• Songs from junior versions of musicals that have been simplified or shortened

• Vocal cuts, except for repeated choruses

Participants in this class may be recommended to advance to the provincial level of competition. All provincial classes for this category are virtual (online) only.

Spoken passages are only permitted if they are published in the score being used and must not exceed 10% of the total selection.

In the “Movement/Musical” field, you must indicate the name of the film, movie, TV show, etc. that the selection is from.

Not Permitted

The following selections are not allowed in this class:

• Songs listed in the RCM or CC classical syllabi:

  • Levels 1–6: Lists A and B

  • Levels 7–10: Lists A, B, and C

• Songs originally written for live, fully staged musicals that were later adapted into movies (e.g., The Sound of Music, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Hamilton, In the Heights, Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked)

• Operetta/light opera selections (e.g., works by Gilbert & Sullivan, Romberg, Lehár, Johann Strauss)

• Selections that are primarily spoken patter

• Songs that were originally commercial pop songs and later used in jukebox musicals

• Selections from junior versions of musicals or shows that have been cut or simplified

Two contrasting musical theatre selections. Please select age-appropriate material. If using costumes, changes must be made quickly between the selections. Maximum time indicated includes set-up, performance, costume change and tear-down. Props are limited to a maximum of two hand-held items.

• Selections must be musically contrasting.

• Spoken passages are allowed only if published in the score and must not exceed 10% of the total performance.

• Age-appropriate material must be selected.

• Songs from musicals that have only been workshopped, or songs from revues, cabarets, or stand-alone musical theatre-style songs (enter these in “Songs from the Screen and More”)

• Songs from movie musicals or TV shows

Pop, pop/folk, R&B, soul, rock, alternative, indie, jazz, or country.

Eligible repertoire includes selections from:

• CC Contemporary Idioms Voice lists, and

• RCM Voice Syllabi: List C (Levels 1–6) and List D (Levels 7–10),
  excluding musical theatre, operetta, and contemporary selections that are not cover songs.

Please ensure all material is age-appropriate.

Accompaniment Requirements

• Only piano or instrumental backing tracks are permitted.

• Backing tracks must not contain background vocals.

• Self-accompaniment is not allowed (see classes 31801 – 31808)

Not Permitted:

• Selections from musical theatre (staged or non-staged), cabaret, revues, operetta, or stand-alone songs in the musical theatre style.

• Rap and hip hop.

• Songs from animated films or any selections classified under “Songs from the Screen and More” (see https://omfa.ca/ssam-chart).

  excluding musical theatre, operetta, and contemporary selections that are not covers.

• Selections from musical theatre (staged or non-staged), cabaret, revues, operetta, or stand-alone songs in musical theatre style

If your selection does not appear on the SSAM suggested list, you must submit it for approval prior to registration by emailing: info@omfa.ca

Groups must consist of 4 to 15 members.

Participants may perform one or two selections. The second selection is optional, but it must not be another movement of the first piece.

Only one selection may include a brief solo passage. The total solo section must not exceed 20% of the selection's total length (in measures).

Please ensure that all repertoire is age-appropriate.
