2026 Syllabus - Woodwinds

NEW for 2026: To be considered for recommendation to the provincial level for solo woodwinds, participants must register for and take part in the Provincial Qualifier Class. If recommended, all selections performed in the Qualifier Class must be presented at the provincial competition.

A selection may be used in one class only. Although memorization is encouraged, it is not required. Competitors must provide their own music stands. Unless specified otherwise, all selections must be performed with live piano accompaniment. Accompanists are permitted to use photocopies as long as the original, legally obtained score is present at the piano.

Own Choice

One selection, own choice. Repertoire can be, but doesn't have to be, from the RCM or CC syllabus. Flute, Clarinet, Recorder, Saxophone, Oboe or Bassoon. Instrument must be identified on registration form.

Concert Class

Participants must perform two solo works of equal difficulty that demonstrate stylistic contrast.

  • Pop music is not permitted.

  • Selections may, but are not required to, be from the RCM or CC syllabus.

  • Appropriateness of repertoire will factor into the overall evaluation.

  • Performances should be presented in a concert-style format.

Duets and Trios

Participants in this class may be recommended to advance to the provincial level of competition. All provincial classes for this category are virtual (online) only.

Perform one classical selection. The ensemble must consist of two or three performers playing the same instrument. Instruments must be specified on the registration form.

Participants must register in the class corresponding to the age of the oldest member of the duet or trio. Those performing at the Associate level or higher must enter the Advanced Class, regardless of age.

Only one member of the group is required to register and pay the entry fee. Please include the names of all partners with the registration.

Memorization is optional.

Small Woodwind Ensembles

Participants in this class may be recommended to advance to the provincial level of competition. All provincial classes for this category are virtual (online) only.

Ensembles may include 4 to 15 performers and may feature any combination of woodwind instruments.

Each ensemble is required to perform one classical selection of its choice. Pop or popular-style music is not permitted.

Performances may include brief solo or small-group passages; however, these sections must not exceed 20% of the total number of measures in the chosen work.

Please register the ensemble under a group name.

This class is intended solely for participants seeking recommendation to the provincial level of competition. 

  • Participants must perform two musically contrasting selections from the same grade/level of the current RCM or CC syllabus.
  • “Teacher’s Choice” pieces are not permitted.

  • If a participant receives a recommendation to the provincial level, both selections performed in this class must also be presented at the provincial competition.

  • Participants who have completed any part of an exam at a particular grade/level before January 1, 2026, are not eligible to enter that same grade/level.

  • Multi-movement works must be performed as outlined in the RCM or CC syllabus for that grade/level. Please clearly indicate which movement(s) will be performed.

  • If a sonata or concerto is chosen as a selection, performers must present at least two consecutive movements, regardless of syllabus indications (RCM or CC) requiring the complete work. Performing the entire piece is optional, provided it fits within the designated time limit.
  • Studies/études listed in the RCM or CC syllabi are allowed, but only one selection may be a study/étude.
