2026 Syllabus - Strings and Ensembles
NEW for 2026: To be considered for recommendation to the provincial level for solo strings, participants must register for and take part in the Provincial Qualifier Class. If recommended, all selections performed in the Qualifier Class must be presented at the provincial competition.
A selection may be used in one class only. Please include the full title, including opus, number, and specific movement. Memorization is not required for Sonatas, Sonatinas, Études/Studies, or ensemble pieces unless otherwise stated. Competitors are responsible for bringing their own music stands. Unless specified otherwise, all selections must be performed with live piano accompaniment. Accompanists are permitted to use photocopies as long as the original, legally obtained score is present at the piano.

Duets and Trios
Participants in this class may be recommended to advance to the provincial level of competition. All provincial classes for this category are virtual (online) only.
Perform one classical selection. The ensemble must consist of two or three performers playing the same instrument. Instruments must be specified on the registration form.
Participants must register in the class corresponding to the age of the oldest member of the duet or trio. Those performing at the Associate level or higher must enter the Advanced Class, regardless of age.
Only one member of the group is required to register and pay the entry fee. Please include the names of all partners with the registration.
Memorization is optional.

Chamber Ensembles
Participants in this class may be recommended to advance to the provincial level of competition.
Chamber music is defined as music written for three to five instruments, with one performer per part, and all parts being of equal importance. Ensembles may include any combination of recognized orchestral instruments—such as strings, woodwinds, brass, harp, guitar, recorder, piano, and/or one vocalist.
If piano is included, the part must be original and not an orchestral reduction.
One selection is required. Memorization is not required.
To determine the appropriate level for entry, use the highest grade/level of the ensemble members. Please register using a group name.

Provincial Qualifier - Classical Upper Strings - Solo
This class is intended solely for participants seeking recommendation to the provincial level of competition.
Note: At the provincial level, Grades/Levels 1 through 5 will be held virtually (online) only.
Participants must perform two musically contrasting selections from the same grade/level. Competitors may not enter a grade/level in which they have already completed an exam prior to December 31, 2025.
Refer to the RCM or CC syllabus to determine the required number and choice of movements for each selection.
Studies/Études listed in the RCM or CC syllabus are permitted; however, only one of the two selections may be a study/étude.
"Teachers' Choice" repertoire is not permitted.
Memorization is required for all selections, except for sonatas.

This class is intended solely for participants seeking recommendation to the provincial level of competition.
It is intended for performers at the Associate level or higher; however, it is not necessary to have formally obtained an Associate diploma. Repertoire at Level 10 or below is not permitted. Selections do not need to appear in the RCM or CC syllabi.
A minimum of two musically contrasting pieces is required. A third piece may be included if the total performance remains within the maximum time limit of 45 minutes.
If performing a sonata or concerto, at least two consecutive movements must be played—even if the RCM or CC syllabus indicates that the full work is required. Performing the complete piece is optional, provided it fits within the allotted time.
Violin Exceptions:
